On April 14, 2005, 23-year-old Virginia native Eric M. Latham began his walk from Nags Head, NC and arrived in San Francisco, CA on November 5, 2005. Eric walked across America to increase awareness of cancer and raise money for research. By the time he reached San Francisco, he had walked 3,591 miles through thirteen states over 206 days straight and raised more than $21,000 for the American Cancer Society. After the walk in July 2006, Eric self-published a book about his walk, the people he met and their cancer stories, called Take Steps With A Purpose: A Walk About America for Cancer Research . From August 2006 to January 2008, he took his book all across the U.S. and even parts of Mexico and Canada sharing his story and raising tens of thousands of dollars for at least 55 cancer centers, hospitals and foundations. During that time he also interviewed thousands of people about what they thought were the most important isues facing America and in May 2008, Eric self-published his second book, Entitled To A Nation .]
