List of Particles - Condensed Matter

Condensed Matter

The field equations of condensed matter physics are remarkably similar to those of high energy particle physics. As a result, much of the theory of particle physics applies to condensed matter physics as well; in particular, there are a selection of field excitations, called quasi-particles, that can be created and explored. These include:

  • Phonons are vibrational modes in a crystal lattice.
  • Excitons are bound states of an electron and a hole.
  • Plasmons are coherent excitations of a plasma.
  • Polaritons are mixtures of photons with other quasi-particles.
  • Polarons are moving, charged (quasi-) particles that are surrounded by ions in a material.
  • Magnons are coherent excitations of electron spins in a material.

Famous quotes containing the words condensed and/or matter:

There is no doubt that the loftiest written wisdom is either rhymed or in some way musically measured,—is, in form as well as substance, poetry; and a volume which should contain the condensed wisdom of mankind need not have one rhythmless line.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Early education can only promise to help make the third and fourth and fifth years of life good ones. It cannot insure without fail that any tomorrow will be successful. Nothing “fixes” a child for life, no matter what happens next. But exciting, pleasing early experiences are seldom sloughed off. They go with the child, on into first grade, on into the child’s long life ahead.
James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)
