List Of Nashville Sounds Managers And Owners

The Nashville Sounds minor league baseball franchise has employed 23 managers and 9 general managers since its inception in Nashville, Tennessee, in the 1978 season. Three managers have guided the team to win their league's championship. George Scherger led the team to win the Southern League title in the 1979 season as the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Johnny Oates managed the team to another Southern League title in the 1982 season as the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. In the 2005 season, as the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, Frank Kremblas led the team to a Pacific Coast League title.

During a two-week period in July and August 1988, the Sounds went through five different managers. The team started the season with Jack Lind, who left due to health problems. His position was filled on an interim basis by pitching coach Wayne Garland until former manager George Scherger, manager of the 1979 Southern League championship Sounds, was hired. He retired after one game and was replaced by Jim Hoff, who stayed a few days before taking up a position with the Reds' front office. Finally, former Texas Rangers manager Frank Lucchesi was hired to lead the Sounds for the rest of the season.

Trent Jewett won 320 games from 1998 to 2000 and 2003 to 2004, placing him first on the all-time wins list for Sounds managers. Having managed the team for 624 games, he is also the longest-tenured manager in team history. The manager with the highest winning percentage over a full season or more is Stump Merrill, whose .622 winning percentage is fifth on the all-time wins list for Sounds managers. Conversely, the lowest winning percentage over a season or more is .454 by the team's first manager Chuck Goggin. Mike Guerrero is the team's current manager; he managed his first Sounds game at the beginning of the 2012 season. These records are correct as of the end of the 2012 season.

Ten men have served in the capacity of general manager for the Sounds. Brad Tammen, previously the club's Vice President of Sales and Marketing, is the team's current general manager. Five men have held principal ownership of the team. Larry Schmittou was the majority shareholder from the team's start until he sold his interest to Al Gordon after the 1996 season. Current owners Frank Ward and Masahiro Honzawa purchased Gordon's stake in the team after the 2008 season.

    “Try speaking. Say ‘Hello!’”
    “Hello. Hello.”
    “What do you hear?”

You know it sounds that way. And yes, I hear
I think I hear a clock and windows rattling....”

We also have to make sure our children know the history of women. Tell them the rotten truth: It wasn’t always possible for women to become doctors or managers or insurance people. Let them be armed with a true picture of the way we want it to be.
    Anne Roiphe (20th century)

You are the majority—in number and intelligence; therefore you are the force—which is justice. Some are scholars, others are owners; a glorious day will come when the scholars will be owners and the owners scholars. Then your power will be complete, and no man will protest against it.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)
