List of Monarchs of The Netherlands

This is a list of monarchs of the Netherlands (Dutch: Koningen der Nederlanden). The list includes the stadtholders of the House of Orange Nassau since 1556, who were voted into office by the semi-independent provinces of the Dutch Republic and the States-General, but acted de facto (and later also de jure) as hereditary heads of state. They are the direct male line ancestors of the later monarchs when the monarchy was established in 1815.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, monarchs and/or netherlands:

A man’s interest in a single bluebird is worth more than a complete but dry list of the fauna and flora of a town.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Love’s boat has been shattered against the life of everyday. You and I are quits, and it’s useless to draw up a list of mutual hurts, sorrows, and pains.
    Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930)

There was about all the Romans a heroic tone peculiar to ancient life. Their virtues were great and noble, and these virtues made them great and noble. They possessed a natural majesty that was not put on and taken off at pleasure, as was that of certain eastern monarchs when they put on or took off their garments of Tyrian dye. It is hoped that this is not wholly lost from the world, although the sense of earthly vanity inculcated by Christianity may have swallowed it up in humility.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

Greece is a sort of American vassal; the Netherlands is the country of American bases that grow like tulip bulbs; Cuba is the main sugar plantation of the American monopolies; Turkey is prepared to kow-tow before any United States pro-consul and Canada is the boring second fiddle in the American symphony.
    Andrei Andreyevich Gromyko (1909–1989)
