As of June 2012, Afghanistan has 18.6 million subscribers in total, a 50% penetration rate. Another estimate, made in September 2010, found a penetration rate of 48.4% over a population estimate of 29.8 million.
The country's telcom regulator is the Afghanistan Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA).
