This is a list of time zone names based on the NATO phonetic alphabet as used by the U.S. military and others. The letter J ("Juliet") is used to indicate the observer's local time. Zulu Time Zone was, until January 1, 1972, equivalent to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The definition of Zulu time then changed to UTC±00:00 which does not use daylight savings. Going west from the Zulu Time Zone to the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean, November through Yankee Time Zone terminology is used for the 12 time zones west of GMT. Going east from the Zulu Time Zone to the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean, Alpha through Mike Time Zone terminology is used for the 12 time zones east of GMT.
