Unaffiliated Sovereign States With Limited International Recognition

Two states with limited international recognition are full members of FIFA and are listed above: Palestine and the Republic of China, the latter under the name "Chinese Taipei" due to the objections of the government of the People's Republic of China. Three further states with limited international recognition have active teams which are not currently affiliated with FIFA or their local confederation.

  • Kosovo
  • Northern Cyprus
  • Western Sahara

Both Kosovo and Northern Cyprus were members of FIFA's recent unaffiliated nations working group, though the activities of this are currently suspended. The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic team had played just one game between 1988 and 2011, but has since been more active.

Although matches against these teams are unofficial, FIFA confirmed in May 2012 that members would be permitted to play friendlies against Kosovo.

Four further states with limited international recognition have never had an active football team: Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia and Transnistria. The first game of national teams Abkhazia - Nagorno-Karabakh took place in 25. September 2012th.

Famous quotes containing the words sovereign, states, limited and/or recognition:

The Sovereign has, under a constitutional monarchy such as ours, three rights—the right to be consulted, the right to encourage, the right to warn. And a king of great sense and sagacity would want no others.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

... there is a place in the United States for the Negro. They are real American citizens, and at home. They have fought and bled and died, like men, to make this country what it is. And if they have got to suffer and die, and be lynched, and tortured, and burned at the stake, I say they are at home.
    Amanda Berry Smith (1837–1915)

The opportunities for heroism are limited in this kind of world: the most people can do is sometimes not to be as weak as they’ve been at other times.
    Angus Wilson (1913–1991)

Admiration. Our polite recognition of another’s resemblance to ourselves.
    Ambrose Bierce (1842–1914)
