List of Lakes of Australia - Types

Types

Most lakes in Australia fall within one of five categories. Excluding lakes created by man-made dams for water storage and other purposes, one can identify the following:

  • coastal lakes and lagoons including perched lakes;
  • natural freshwater inland lakes, often ephemeral and some part of wetland or swamp areas;
  • the Main Range containing mainland Australia's five glacial lakes. In Tasmania, due to glaciation, there is a large number of natural freshwater lakes on the central plateau, many of which have been enlarged or modified by hydro-electric developments;
  • predominantly dry, salt lakes in the flat desert regions of the country lacking organised drainage; and
  • lakes created in volcanic remnants.

Famous quotes containing the word types:

    Our children evaluate themselves based on the opinions we have of them. When we use harsh words, biting comments, and a sarcastic tone of voice, we plant the seeds of self-doubt in their developing minds.... Children who receive a steady diet of these types of messages end up feeling powerless, inadequate, and unimportant. They start to believe that they are bad, and that they can never do enough.
    Stephanie Martson (20th century)

    If there is nothing new on the earth, still the traveler always has a resource in the skies. They are constantly turning a new page to view. The wind sets the types on this blue ground, and the inquiring may always read a new truth there.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    He’s one of those know-it-all types that, if you flatter the wig off him, he chatter like a goony bird at mating time.
