- Shigeta Akira: Won the Rookie King the year after Ippo. A southpaw. Sparred against Ippo before going on to face Sendou in what was Sendos second title defense. Destroyed by Sendou, who demonstrated a startling new speed. Was forced to retire after the title bout.
