The Friday prayer leaders (Emam-e Jom'eh) lead the faithful in the performance of the Friday prayer in Iran. (Friday prayer, Salat al-Jumu'ah is a congregational prayer held just after noon in lieu of dhuhr or noon-time prayer done at that time the rest of the week.) According to Asghar Schirazi, the leaders are appointed directly by Iran's Supreme Leader or through the Secretariat of Friday Imams in all the cities. Their "official functions is to supervise religious activity, propagate the doctrine of Valayat-e Faqih and agitation," but in practice they have considerably more power and "stands over the local governors and mayors." They have also been described as part of the Islamic Republic's "parallel layer" of power, their function being in part to watch over local government officials, such as provincial governors.

Famous quotes containing the word importance:

I ascribe a basic importance to the phenomenon of language.... To speak means to be in a position to use a certain syntax, to grasp the morphology of this or that language, but it means above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization.
    Frantz Fanon (1925–1961)

People without imagination are beginning to tire of the importance attached to comfort, to culture, to leisure, to all that destroys imagination. This means that people are not really tired of comfort, culture and leisure, but of the use to which they are put, which is precisely what stops us enjoying them.
    Raoul Vaneigem (b. 1934)

Whoever deliberately attempts to insure confidentiality with another person is usually in doubt as to whether he inspires that person’s confidence in him. One who is sure that he inspires confidence attaches little importance to confidentiality.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
