Hamlets

In Saskatchewan, a hamlet is an unincorporated community with at least five occupied dwellings situated on separate lots and at least 10 separate lots, the majority of which are an average size of less than one acre. The people in a hamlet may apply for organized hamlet status within the rural municipality in which the hamlet is located.

Many, but not all, organized hamlets in Saskatchewan are accorded the status of designated place in the Canadian census; unorganized hamlets are not.

As of 2008, there are 171 organized hamlets in Saskatchewan.

Famous quotes containing the word hamlets:

Mr. [John] Barrymore’s smile was the smile of an actor who hates actors, and who knows that he is going to kill two or three before the play is over. I am not an actor-killer, but I like my Hamlets to dislike actors, if you know what I mean, and I think you don’t.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

The instincts of merry England lingered on here with exceptional vitality, and the symbolic customs which tradition has attached to each season of the year were yet a reality on Egdon. Indeed, the impulses of all such outlandish hamlets are pagan still: in these spots homage to nature, self-adoration, frantic gaieties, fragments of Teutonic rites to divinities whose names are forgotten, seem in some way or other to have survived mediaeval doctrine.
    Thomas Hardy (1840–1928)
