The Three Cities
Bormla (Cospicua), has the designation of Città Cospicua. It was granted this title by grand master Marc'Antonio Zondadari in 1722. (Population: 6,000)
L-Isla (Senglea), has the designation of Città Invicta. Senglea is the most densely populated city in Malta. (Population: 3,500)
These three "Città" used to form the urban and political centre of the Island before the building of Valletta. Later they became collectively referred to as the three cities.

Famous quotes containing the word cities:
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land,
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.”
—Emma Lazarus (18491887)
