List of Catholicos of The East

This is a list of Catholicos of the East. Presently the Catholicos have jurisdiction over the Syriac Orthodox Christians in India.

The Catholicate was established as a bishopric initially by Apostle Thomas in Edessa, Mesopotamia during his Eastern mission. The see was elevated to a titular Catholicate during the days of Mar Papa bar Gaggai. Jurisdiction over the entire Eastern Church was confirmed to the Catholicate with the blessings of Patriarchate of the Syriac Orthodox Church sending Marutha of Maiperqat to the Persian region during the reign of Persian Emperor Yesgargh in 410 AD. The see was then moved to Selucia-Ctesiphon, the capital of Persian Empire and then to Tigris and Mosul in Iraq following the Nestorian Schism in the church. The see was reinstated in India by the Patriarch of Antioch in 1912 AD.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list and/or east:

Modern tourist guides have helped raised tourist expectations. And they have provided the natives—from Kaiser Wilhelm down to the villagers of Chichacestenango—with a detailed and itemized list of what is expected of them and when. These are the up-to- date scripts for actors on the tourists’ stage.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)

My list of things I never pictured myself saying when I pictured myself as a parent has grown over the years.
    Polly Berrien Berends (20th century)

The very nursery tales of this generation were the nursery tales of primeval races. They migrate from east to west, and again from west to east; now expanded into the “tale divine” of bards, now shrunk into a popular rhyme.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
