For all elections past 1804, "P" denotes a presidential vote, and "VP" denotes a vice presidential vote. Bold entries are successful candidates; Italicized entries are runners-up who became Vice President under the original system.

Various electors did not cast their votes, including:
- An Ohio elector in 1812
- Two Maryland electors in 1832
- A Nebraska elector in 1864
- A Washington, DC elector in 2000

—F. Scott Fitzgerald (18961940)
“The advice of their elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books.”
—Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (18411935)
“I find that the respectable man, so called, has immediately drifted from his position, and despairs of his country, when his country has more reason to despair of him. He forthwith adopts one of the candidates ... as the only available one, thus proving that he is himself available for any purposes of the demagogue. His vote is of no more worth than that of any unprincipled foreigner or hireling native, who may have been bought.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“How much would it cost you to stand at the wrong end of a shooting gallery?”
—S.J. Perelman, U.S. screenwriter, Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, and Norman Z. McLeod. Groucho Marx, Horsefeathers, Huxley College president to con artist Baravelli (Chico Marx)
“Printer, philosopher, scientist, author and patriot, impeccable husband and citizen, why isnt he an archetype? Pioneers, Oh Pioneers! Benjamin was one of the greatest pioneers of the United States. Yet we just cant do with him. Whats wrong with him then? Or whats wrong with us?”
—D.H. (David Herbert)

“I want to ask You if it stands to reason
That women prophets should be burned as witches,
Whereas men prophets are received with honor.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)

—Honoré De Balzac (17991850)
“But you must know the class of sweet womenwho are always so happy to declare they have all the rights they want; they are perfectly willing to let their husbands vote for themMare and always have been numerous, though it is an occasion for thankfulness that they are becoming less so.”
