List of Bus Routes in Staten Island - Bus Route History

Bus Route History

Except for the S61, all current Staten Island bus routes originally had different designations before they were renumbered by service patterns, as follows:

  • S4x: North Shore services
  • S5x: North-south cross-island services
  • S6x: Victory Boulevard services
  • S7x: South Shore services

Old and new routes are given below, along with discontinued service patterns. In addition, prior to the late 1980s, routes were designated with R (for Richmond County) instead of S. The R designation is shown in the "Old Route" section.

Famous quotes containing the words bus, route and/or history:

Nora was always free with it and threw her heart away as if it was a used bus ticket.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

A route differs from a road not only because it is solely intended for vehicles, but also because it is merely a line that connects one point with another. A route has no meaning in itself; its meaning derives entirely from the two points that it connects. A road is a tribute to space. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop. A route is the triumphant devaluation of space, which thanks to it has been reduced to a mere obstacle to human movement and a waste of time.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)

When the history of guilt is written, parents who refuse their children money will be right up there in the Top Ten.
    Erma Brombeck (20th century)
