The tanagers are a large group of small- to medium-sized passerine birds that inhabit the New World, mainly in the tropics. Many species are brightly colored. They are seedeaters, but they prefer fruit and nectar. Most have short, rounded wings. In South Carolina, one species one species of questionable origin has been recorded.
