List of Birds of South Carolina - Flamingoes

Flamingoes

Order: Phoenicopteriformes. Family: Phoenicopteridae

Flamingoes are gregarious wading birds, usually 3.0 to 4.9 feet (0.91 to 1.5 m) in height, found in both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. They are more numerous in the latter. Flamingos filter-feed on shellfish and algae. Their oddly shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they consume, and are uniquely used upside-down. There are six species worldwide, of which one species of questionable origin and one hypothetical species have been recorded.

  • Greater Flamingo, Phoencopterus ruber (H)
  • Chilean Flamingo, Phoencopterus chilenses (P2)
