She received a Best New Artist nomination at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) for the song "Borderline". Madonna was followed by a series of hit singles from her studio albums Like a Virgin (1984) and True Blue (1986) which gave her global recognition. Madonna became a pop icon for pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in popular music and imagery in her music videos, which became a fixture on MTV. In 1985, she received a number of VMA nominations for her music videos and two nominations in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category of the Grammy Awards. Billboard magazine listed her as the "Top Pop Artist" for 1985, as well as the "Top Pop Singles Artist" for the next two years.

From 1987 to 1990, Madonna won a number of awards at the VMAs for the music videos of her songs "Like a Prayer", "Express Yourself" and "Vogue". MTV also honored her as the "Artist of the Decade" in 1989. The Blond Ambition World Tour won the award for Most Creative Stage Production at the 1990 Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; it was also nominated in the Major Tour of the Year category. Alongside her music awards, Madonna was honored for her charitable works in helping cure AIDS, by the AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmfAR). In 1992, Madonna won her first Grammy Award in the category of Best Long Form Music Video, for the video album of the Blond Ambition Tour. The video release of her 1990 compilation album, The Immaculate Collection, also won the Best Long Form Video award at the VMAs.

In 1996, Madonna played the starring role in the film, Evita, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. It also won her the VMA for Video of the Year for the title track. From 2001 to 2008, Madonna embarked on four worldwide concert tours—Drowned World (2001), Re-Invention (2004), Confessions (2006) and Sticky & Sweet (2008)—which received a total of eight nominations at the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards, but won only one award for the Confessions Tour in 2006, in the category of Most Creative Stage Production. Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, received and/or madonna:

Religious literature has eminent examples, and if we run over our private list of poets, critics, philanthropists and philosophers, we shall find them infected with this dropsy and elephantiasis, which we ought to have tapped.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Do your children view themselves as successes or failures? Are they being encouraged to be inquisitive or passive? Are they afraid to challenge authority and to question assumptions? Do they feel comfortable adapting to change? Are they easily discouraged if they cannot arrive at a solution to a problem? The answers to those questions will give you a better appraisal of their education than any list of courses, grades, or test scores.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)

Biography, in its purer form, confined to the ended lives of the true and brave, may be held the fairest meed of human virtue—one given and received in entire disinterestedness—since neither can the biographer hope for acknowledgment from the subject, not the subject at all avail himself of the biographical distinction conferred.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

In our minds lives the madonna image—the all-embracing, all- giving tranquil mother of a Raphael painting, one child at her breast, another at her feet; a woman fulfilled, one who asks nothing more than to nurture and nourish. This creature of fantasy, this myth, is the model—the unattainable ideal against which women measure, not only their performance, but their feelings about being mothers.
    Lillian Breslow Rubin (20th century)
