  • September 6 – Mammoth Lakes Air Show – Civilian stunt pilot Gary Loundagin, 42, of Livermore, California, was killed when his vintage T-34B aircraft crashed, he had executed a loop maneuver with insufficient altitude for recovery. The aircraft impacted next to the runway but did not explode. The high elevation of the airport was probably not accounted for by Loundagin, contributing to the mishap.
  • July 1, 1987: A C-130 Hercules cargo plane crashes at Fort Bragg's Sicily Drop Zone, killing five servicemen and severely burning two others. The 1964 model Lockheed C-130 assigned to the 317th Tactical Airlift Wing at Pope Air Force Base, was executing a low-altitude parachute extraction system maneuver during the annual Fort Bragg and Pope capabilities exercise. A crowd of 5,000 people were attending the show when the crash happened.
