Hugh Grant (who played a spoof version of the Doctor in Curse of Fatal Death) has stated that he turned down the role and expressed his regret once he saw how the show turned out.
Bill Nighy was also rumoured to have been offered the role (and was erroneously claimed to have been cast), as was Eddie Izzard after the Fourth Doctor actor, Tom Baker, publicly supported his potential casting. The role of the Ninth Doctor went to Christopher Eccleston.
