Linux Startup Process - Boot Loader Phase - GRUB

GRUB

  1. The first stage loader (stage1) is loaded and executed either by the BIOS from the Master boot record (MBR) or by another boot loader from the partition boot sector.
  2. If necessary, an intermediate stage loader (stage1.5) is loaded and executed by the first stage loader. This may be necessary if the second stage loader is not contiguous, or if the filesystem or hardware requires special handling in order to access the second stage loader.
  3. The second stage loader (stage2) is then loaded and executed. This displays the GRUB startup menu, which allows the user to choose an operating system or to examine and edit startup parameters.
  4. After an operating system is chosen, it is loaded and executed.

Famous quotes containing the word grub:

O Grub Street! how do I bemoan thee,
Whose graceless children scorn to own thee!
... Yet thou hast greater cause to be
Ashamed of them, than they of thee.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)

I have tasted but little bread in my life. It has been mere grub and provender for the most part. Of bread that nourished the brain and the heart, scarcely any. There is absolutely none on the tables even of the rich.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The Anglo-American can indeed cut down, and grub up all this waving forest, and make a stump speech, and vote for Buchanan on its ruins, but he cannot converse with the spirit of the tree he fells, he cannot read the poetry and mythology which retire as he advances. He ignorantly erases mythological tablets in order to print his handbills and town-meeting warrants on them.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
