Linda Thompson (attorney) - Proposed March On Washington

Proposed March On Washington

In 1994 Thompson declared herself "Acting Adjutant General" of the "Unorganized Militia of the United States" and announced plans for an armed march on Washington, D.C. in September of that year. She declared that militiamen would arrest and try for treason in "Citizen's Courts" those Congressional representatives not living up to their oath of office. The proposed march was almost denounced by groups on the right wing, including the John Birch Society. Thompson soon cancelled the march. Later she was arrested for blocking a President Bill Clinton motorcade in Indianapolis and several weapons were found in her automobile.

Famous quotes containing the words proposed, march and/or washington:

The proposed Constitution ... is, in strictness, neither a national nor a federal constitution; but a composition of both.
    James Madison (1751–1836)

Yet nightly pitch my moving tent,
    A day’s march nearer home.
    James Montgomery (1771–1854)

... what a strange time it was! Who knew his neighbor? Who was a traitor and who a patriot? The hero of to-day was the suspected of to-morrow.... There were traitors in the most secret council-chambers. Generals, senators, and secretaries looked at each other with suspicious eyes.... It is a great wonder that the city of Washington was not betrayed, burned, destroyed a half-dozen times.
    M. E. W. Sherwood (1826–1903)
