The Light of Christ is the knowledge of good and evil given to all mankind before baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. The conscience is a manifestation of the Light of Christ, enabling each individual to judge for themselves. Whether to follow the commandments of God, and hope for His eternal rewards, or to follow the enticings of the devil which persuadeth man to do evil and become captive and damned to hell and eternal darkness.
The Light of Christ is the knowledge of the difference between right and wrong.
LDS reference to the side here, the mainstream Christian perspective is that Jesus resides within each of us, that his light shines through us and is to contrast the darkness of this world. By allowing his light to shine through us is to allow him to work through us, it is not merely us doing good works, but his good works are done through us.
