Liban Hussein - Life Before Arrest

Life Before Arrest

Hussein ran two businesses in Ottawa. The first was a cleaning company he started in the hopes of being able to offer his family employment, improving their chances of successful immigration to Canada. The second was a hawala money transfer business named Barakaat North America Inc. which his brother managed in Massachusetts. When it was announced that al-Qaeda was believed to have ties to the Somali money service which Hussein contracted, his brother was arrested in Boston and the cleaning franchise revoked Hussein's license.

Hussein went to the Ottawa police department, where he was arrested at the request of the United States. He was later represented by lawyer Michael Edelson.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or arrest:

The woods were as fresh and full of vegetable life as a lichen in wet weather, and contained many interesting plants; but unless they are of white pine, they are treated with as little respect here as a mildew, and in the other case they are only the more quickly cut down.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life. Since man is mortal, the only immortality possible for him is to leave something behind him that is immortal since it will always move. This is the artist’s way of scribbling “Kilroy was here” on the wall of the final and irrevocable oblivion through which he must someday pass.
    William Faulkner (1897–1962)
