Discrimination Protections

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is prohibited in government employment, but there are no other state-wide protections. The cities of Ann Arbor, Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Douglas, East Lansing, Ferndale, Grand Rapids, Huntington Woods, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Mount Pleasant, Muskegon, Saugatuck, Traverse City, Ypsilanti, Saugatuck and Union have local laws that prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation only is also banned in Flint and Grand Ledge.

In March 2013, Governor Rick Snyder signed an emergency harbor dredging funding bill that made private marinas ineligible for a new loan program if they discriminate based on sexual orientation.
