Famous quotes containing the words gender, identity and/or expression:

Anthropologists have found that around the world whatever is considered “men’s work” is almost universally given higher status than “women’s work.” If in one culture it is men who build houses and women who make baskets, then that culture will see house-building as more important. In another culture, perhaps right next door, the reverse may be true, and basket- weaving will have higher social status than house-building.
—Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen. Excerpted from, Gender Grace: Love, Work, and Parenting in a Changing World (1990)

There is a terrible blindness in the love that wants only to accommodate. It’s not only to do with omissions and half-truths. It implants a lack of being in the speaker and robs the self of an identity without which it is impossible for one to grow close to another.
    Alexander Theroux (b. 1940)

You see, my dear, it occurred to me that he’d make a delightful coffin follower. That, that expression of melancholy. It’s very interesting, don’t you think so, my love?
    Vernon Harris (c. 1910)
