Lester Bird - Early Life and Education

Early Life and Education

Bird was born in New York City on February 21, 1938. Lester and his elder brother Vere Bird, Jr., also a British-educated lawyer, have been considered sometime rivals, with the New York Times writing in 1990 that Lester had always overshadowed his brother, according to those who have known them both. He was educated at Antigua Grammar School and was brought up as a Methodist. Bird was a cricket player in his youth, playing for the Leeward Islands, and a long jump champion. He attended the University of Michigan, where he was All-American long jumper in 1960 and graduated in 1962. Bird completed his study of law in Britain and was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1969. From 1969 to 1976, Bird engaged in private practice in Antigua.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or education:

The early Christian rules of life were not made to last, because the early Christians did not believe that the world itself was going to last.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

she bit the towel and called on God
and I saw her life stretch out . . .
I saw her torn in childbirth,
and I saw her, at that moment,
in her own death and I knew that she
    knew.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

There are words in that letter to his wife, respecting the education of his daughters, which deserve to be framed and hung over every mantelpiece in the land. Compare this earnest wisdom with that of Poor Richard.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
