Leonora Armstrong - Early Life

Early Life

Leonora Stirling Holsapple was born on June 23, 1895 in the little town of Hudson, New York. Her father was Samuel Norris Holsapple and her mother was Grace Heathcote Stirling, who served actively in civic work and had taught school. However, Grace had serious health problems, and died soon after Leonora turned five years old. This created a profound effect upon Leonora and her younger sister Alethe during their childhood and adolescence. Their father was devastated at the loss of his beautiful young wife and often left the two little girls to the care of their grandmothers and a housekeeper.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

Here is this vast, savage, howling mother of ours, Nature, lying all around, with such beauty, and such affection for her children, as the leopard; and yet we are so early weaned from her breast to society, to that culture which is exclusively an interaction of man on man,—a sort of breeding in and in, which produces at most a merely English nobility, a civilization destined to have a speedy limit.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Whatever, in fact, is modern in our life we owe to the Greeks. Whatever is an anachronism is due to mediaevalism.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
