Leon County, Florida in The American Civil War - 2nd Florida Cavalry

2nd Florida Cavalry

The 2nd Florida Cavalry Regiment was organized in late 1862 from independent companies, but never fought together as a regiment. Recruits were from Tallahassee, Milton and Gadsden, Madison, Marion and St. Johns counties.

Detachments of the 2nd Florida Cavalry fought at Battle of Olustee, Battle of Gainesville, Battle of Station Four, and Battle of Natural Bridge. A detachment also was involved in the sinking of the SS Columbine.

The 2nd Florida Cavalry surrendered in May 1865.
