Since 1988 Leixlip has had a nine member Town Council (formerly Leixlip Town Commissioners), headed by a Cathaoirleach (chairperson), which has control over many local matters, although it is limited in that it is not also a planning authority. Leixlip also elects four councillors to the principal local authority, Kildare County Council, in a combined Local Electoral Area with Maynooth.
In 1990 the town's coat of arms was presented by minister P Flynn.
