Legislative Assemblies of The Roman Kingdom - Calate Assembly

Calate Assembly

The Calate Assembly ("Comitia Calata") was the oldest of the Roman assemblies. Very little is known about this assembly. The Calate Assembly met on the Capitoline Hill, and was also organized on the basis of the thirty Curia. The purpose of this assembly was not legislative or legal, but rather religious. The Pontifex Maximus presided over the assembly, and it performed duties such as inaugurating priests and selecting Vestal virgins.

Famous quotes containing the word assembly:

A man may be a heretic in the truth; and if he believe things only because his pastor says so, or the assembly so determines, without knowing other reason, though his belief be true, yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy.
    John Milton (1608–1674)
