Legislation On Chinese Indonesians - Current Practice

Current Practice

During his tenure as President, Abdurrahman Wahid ended restrictions on Chinese culture and language, and made Chinese New Year as a national holiday. Today, Indonesian Chinese hold the same rights as other ethnic groups. They can practise their culture daily, with the use of the Chinese language being also now allowed. Metro TV became the first to air its news in Chinese.

Chinese schools are still prohibited because the Indonesian government uses only Indonesian as the medium of education. However, Chinese may be taught as an optional extracurricular subject.

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or practice:

Reputation runs behind the current state of affairs.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

We black women must forgive black men for not protecting us against slavery, racism, white men, our confusion, their doubts. And black men must forgive black women for our own sometimes dubious choices, divided loyalties, and lack of belief in their possibilities. Only when our sons and our daughters know that forgiveness is real, existent, and that those who love them practice it, can they form bonds as men and women that really can save and change our community.
