Legends and Tales of The Pine Barrens - Black Dog

Black Dog

Another old Pine Barren story tells of the Black Dog, a ghostly creature that roamed the beaches and forests from Absecon Island to Barnegat Bay. In most folklore (such as English and Germanic folklore), Black Dogs are considered forces of evil. In fact there is an English legend akin to this. However, the Black Dog of the Pine Barren is often considered a harmless spirit. According to folklore, pirates on Absecon Island attacked a ship and killed its crew. Among those killed were the cabin boy and his black dog.

Famous quotes containing the words black and/or dog:

A boy not beautiful, nor good, nor clever,
A black cloud full of storms too hot for keeping,
A sword beneath his mother’s heart— yet never
Woman bewept her babe as this is weeping.
    John Crowe Ransom (1888–1974)

Now that I had heard a part of his history, he appeared singularly destitute,—a captain without any vessel, only a greatcoat! and that perhaps a borrowed one! Not even a dog followed him; only his title stuck to him.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
