Legend of the Galactic Heroes (銀河英雄伝説, Ginga Eiyū Densetsu?), also known as Gineiden (銀英伝?), is a series of science fiction novels by Yoshiki Tanaka. For over 150 years in the distant future two interstellar human states - the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance - were embroiled in what seem to be a never-ending war within the Milky Way galaxy. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Müsel and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.
An anime adaptation of the novels by Artland ran from 1988 to 2000 as well as a manga based on the novels, with art by Katsumi Michihara. There have also been several video game adaptations with the most recent release in 2008 being a real time simulation. Neither the novels, anime, nor manga have been released officially in the English language. However, there have been English fan translations.
