Australia banned the purchase of fully automatic firearms in the 1930s throughout most parts of the country. The primary way for an individual in Australia to legally own an AK-47 is to possess a Firearm Collector's Licence and have the firearm deactivated by welding the rifle's action and plugging the barrel or permanently restricting it to blank-fire. Some states allow collectors to own working AK-47s and fire them at organized events.
