Left Ecology Freedom (Sinistra Ecologia Libertà , SEL; previously Left and Freedom, Sinistra e Libertà , SL) is a democratic socialist political party in Italy. The party's leader is Nichi Vendola.
According to party documents, SEL is the answer to "a dramatic vacuum at the left" and aims at building an alternative to modern capitalism and a left for the new century. "The "fundamental principles" of SEL are "peace and nonviolence, employment and social justice, knowledge and ecological reconversion of the economy and society".
According to official party figures, SEL had 125,074 registered members as of December 2012 making it the fourth-largest party in Italy. The majority of members are aged under 60.
Two independents close to SEL, Giuliano Pisapia and Marco Doria, are mayors of Milan and Genoa, respectively. Following 2013 general election, Laura Boldrini, a MP of SEL, was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies on 16 March 2013.

“I said I had the tree. It wasnt true.
The opposite was true. The tree had me.
The minute it was left with me alone,
It caught me up as if I were the fish
And it the fishpole.”

—Karin Sheldon (b. c. 1945)
“It is not enough that France should be regarded as a country which enjoys the remains of a freedom acquired long ago. If she is still to count in the worldand if she does not intend to, she may as well perishshe must be seen by her own citizens and by all men as an ever-flowing source of liberty. There must not be a single genuine lover of freedom in the whole world who can have a valid reason for hating France.”
—Simone Weil (19091943)
