The Prison Today

HMP Leeds serves magistrates and crown courts in West Yorkshire, and parts of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

In addition to serving the courts, the key focus of the prison is to ensure prisoners are discharged, having had their housing needs assessed and where possible settled accommodation and employment arranged. The establishment also focuses on support to prisoners with regards to health and lifestyle, including drug detoxification and prescribing programmes as well as the delivery of the Short Duration Drugs Programme.

The prison can house up to 1154 prisoners in six residential units, a segregation unit and in-patients Healthcare Facility.

In January 2010 it was announced that three members of HMP Leeds staff, Shakeel Meer, Senior Officer T Murray and Senior Officer G Wilson, had been granted a coveted Butler Trust Award award for their work “Work which promotes fairness and equality in a diverse population”.

In September 2011, HMP Leeds became the first public sector prison to be awarded the prestigious Investors in Excellence award.

On 8 December 2011 it was announced that a member of HMP Leeds staff, Officer P Raistrick, had been granted a coveted Butler Trust award.
