American Idol Covers
Until the 8th season of the reality television singing competition American Idol, in 2009, no contestant had ever played a song of Zeppelin, but it changed when Adam Lambert sang "Whole Lotta Love" on this year's Top 4.
After this, Haley Reinhart sang "What Is And What Should Never Be" on the Top 3 of the 10th season, but didn't make it through to the finale. Even though she fell down during the performance, Haley received a standing ovation from the judges.
In 2012 (the 11th season of the show), another girl covered the band: Elise Testone picked Led Zeppelin as her "personal idol" (theme of the Top 9 week) and sang "Whole Lotta Love". She also got a standing ovation by the end of the performance.

Famous quotes containing the words american, idol and/or covers:
“The fact that the adult American Negro female emerges a formidable character is often met with amazement, distaste and even belligerence. It is seldom accepted as an inevitable outcome of the struggle won by survivors, and deserves respect if not enthusiastic acceptance.”
—Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
“Its idea of production value is spending a million dollars dressing up a story that any good writer would throw away. Its vision of the rewarding movie is a vehicle for some glamour-puss with two expressions and eighteen changes of costume, or for some male idol of the muddled millions with a permanent hangover, six worn-out acting tricks, the build of a lifeguard, and the mentality of a chicken-strangler.”
—Raymond Chandler (18881959)
“In truth, politeness is artificial good humor, it covers the natural want of it, and ends by rendering habitual a substitute nearly equivalent to the real virtue.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
