Leadership Conference of Women Religious

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) is a canonically approved membership organization which serves as a support system and voice for nuns (Catholic women religious) in the United States.

As of 2013, the group is under investigation by the Holy Office via Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller over heretical and doctrinal issues, a position disputed by some of its dissident leaders. In addition, there is a possibility of either a withdrawal of canonical license by the Pope or schism from the group.

Under the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop James Peter Sartain was officially tasked to oversee the doctrinal reform and its statutes for a limited five-year deadline.

Pope Francis reaffirmed the canonical investigation formerly sanctioned by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to reform their charisms and organizational teachings. The organization's members were ordered to review their statutes and reassess their plans and programs.

By contrast, members are not affiliated with the smaller Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious which passed an Apostolic Visitation from Rome in 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words leadership, conference, women and/or religious:

The liberal wing of the feminist movement may have improved the lives of its middle- and upper-class constituency—indeed, 1992 was the Year of the White Middle Class Woman—but since the leadership of this faction of the feminist movement has singled out black men as the meta-enemy of women, these women represent one of the most serious threats to black male well-being since the Klan.
    Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)

For 350 years we have been taught that reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man. Football’s place is to add a patina of character, a deference to the rules and a respect for authority.
    Walter Wellesley (Red)

I kept in mind that the minute it got too rough, the minute the fourteen-hour days became too long, the minute people started to be naggy and frustrating, I knew that I could walk away and there were over seventy-nine thousand women who would trade shoes with me in a second.
    Kaye Lani Rae Rafko (b. c. 1968)

What we must look for here is, 1st, religious and moral principles; 2ndly, gentlemanly conduct; 3rdly, intellectual ability.
    Thomas Arnold (1795–1842)
