Popular Culture

Law enforcement jargon is heavily used in police procedurals and similar violent shows. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, a television series about forensic scientists, uses many acronyms such as AFIS, CODIS and DB.

The numeric code 187 from the California Penal Code section dealing with murder has been featured in numerous gangsta rap songs such as Deep Cover and as the title of the movie One Eight Seven.

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

You seem to think that I am adapted to nothing but the sugar-plums of intellect and had better not try to digest anything stronger.... a writer of popular sketches in magazines; a lecturer before Lyceums and College societies; a dabbler in metaphysics, poetry, and art, than which I would rather die, for if it has come to that, alas! verily, as you say, mediocrity has fallen on the name of Adams.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

I’ve finally figured out why soap operas are, and logically should be, so popular with generations of housebound women. They are the only place in our culture where grown-up men take seriously all the things that grown-up women have to deal with all day long.
    Gloria Steinem (b. 1934)
