Police officers are divided into nine ranks:

  • Superintendent General
  • Superintendent Supervisor
  • Chief Superintendent
  • Senior Superintendent
  • Superintendent
  • Inspector
  • Assistant Inspector
  • Sergeant
  • Senior Police Officer
  • Police Officer

The NPA Commissioner General holds the highest position of the Japanese police. His title is not a rank, but rather denotes his position as head of the NPA. On the other hand, the MPD Superintendent General represents not only the highest rank in the system but also assignment as head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Famous quotes containing the word rank:

But he thought of his sisters, proud and cold,
And his mother, vain of her rank and gold.
    John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892)

    The sleek Brazilian jaguar
Does not in its arboreal gloom
Distil so rank a feline smell
    As Grishkin in a drawing-room.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

In a famous Middletown study of Muncie, Indiana, in 1924, mothers were asked to rank the qualities they most desire in their children. At the top of the list were conformity and strict obedience. More than fifty years later, when the Middletown survey was replicated, mothers placed autonomy and independence first. The healthiest parenting probably promotes a balance of these qualities in children.
