Lattice Mast - Use in The United States Navy

Use in The United States Navy

The South Carolina-class battleships were the first class of American battleships to feature lattice masts, which were to become a standard fixture on all American battleships, and many cruiser classes. All American battleships, up to the Colorado-class battleships were equipped with lattice masts, although in the 1920s to 1930s, the older battleships had their lattice masts replaced with more modern tripod masts. The newer Tennessee and Colorado classes retained their original lattice masts at the start of World War II.

Famous quotes containing the words united, states and/or navy:

The popular colleges of the United States are turning out more educated people with less originality and fewer geniuses than any other country.
    Caroline Nichols Churchill (1833–?)

Methodological individualism is the doctrine that psychological states are individuated with respect to their causal powers.
    Jerry Alan Fodor (b. 1935)

People run away from the name subsidy. It is a subsidy. I am not afraid to call it so. It is paid for the purpose of giving a merchant marine to the whole country so that the trade of the whole country will be benefitted thereby, and the men running the ships will of course make a reasonable profit.... Unless we have a merchant marine, our navy if called upon for offensive or defensive work is going to be most defective.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
