Academics

The school was inspected in November 2000 by the Department of Education. The following strengths were identified:

  • Exemplary behaviour and motivation of the pupils
  • Many instances of good teaching
  • High standards achieved by many of the pupils
  • Good accommodation.


With J Wilson as headmaster, the school flourished with pupils gaining an overall excellent standard of teaching with GCSE and A Level grades much higher than the Northern Ireland average, which has the highest average throughout the UK. Larne Grammar School is one of the most highly respected schools in the UK, and is regarded by many as one of the best schools to be enrolled in. To enrol at the school, pupils go through several selection processes to ensure that all pupils have a high academic standard, which highlights the superiority of the school.


During Year 8 at Larne Grammar School, pupils study English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French, History, Geography, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Religious Education, Art and Design, Home Economics, Technology and Design, Music, Physical Education and Learning for Life and Work which is made up of Personal Development, Citizenship and Employability. During Years 9 and 10, pupils study all of the subjects above, but with the addition of Spanish.

During Years 11 and 12, pupils study for their GCSE examinations. Pupils study English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Information and Communication Technologies and Religious Education. Pupils also choose to study four of the following subjects: Additional Mathematics, English Literature, French, Spanish, History, Geography, Home Economics, Art and Design, Health and Social Care, Engineering, Technology and Design, Music and Physical Education.

During Years 13 and 14, pupils study four subjects for their A Levels. Pupils can choose to study all of the subjects above as well as Psychology, Further Mathematics, Human Biology, Accounting, Sport, Applied Mathematics, Applied Business Studies, Applied Science, History of Music, Performing Arts, Law and Computing.

Each year, LGS pupils exceed expectations and achieve excellent GCSE and A Level results. All GCSE students gain at least a Grade'C' in all ten of their examinations, with over 80% of pupils gaining only 'A's and 'A*'s. Many pupils achieve 100% in one or more examinations. For A level, a large majority of students gain 'A*' grades, with 100% of pupils achieving 'E' and higher.
