Languages Of Catalonia

There are three languages with official status in Catalonia (an autonomous community of Spain):

  • Catalan,
  • Spanish (official throughout Spain) and,
  • Aranese (a dialect of Occitan spoken in the Aran Valley).

A fourth language, Catalan Sign Language, is also officially recognized.

Many other languages are spoken in Catalonia as a result of recent immigration from all over the world.

Catalan has enjoyed special status since the approval of the Statute of Autonomy of 1979 which declares it to be the language "proper to Catalonia". Also with official status are Spanish and Aranese. Spanish had been the only official language for most periods between the 18th century and 1975.

Famous quotes containing the word languages:

No doubt, to a man of sense, travel offers advantages. As many languages as he has, as many friends, as many arts and trades, so many times is he a man. A foreign country is a point of comparison, wherefrom to judge his own.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
