Lancaster Royal Grammar School - School Societies

School Societies

LRGS is home to a wide range of student run societies, including a Literature Society, History Society, Science Society, Armchair Generals, Duke of Edinburgh's award, and the Whewell Society. The Whewell Society, named in honour of William Whewell, an old boy, was founded in 1908 and is the oldest continuous society in the school. It was founded by the sixth form as a society to promote the arts, music and debate. Since the 1950s, the society has been purely debating and has enjoyed success in competitions. It continues to thrive under student leadership.

Famous quotes containing the words school and/or societies:

I have often told you that I am that little fish who swims about under a shark and, I believe, lives indelicately on its offal. Anyway, that is the way I am. Life moves over me in a vast black shadow and I swallow whatever it drops with relish, having learned in a very hard school that one cannot be both a parasite and enjoy self-nourishment without moving in worlds too fantastic for even my disordered imagination to people with meaning.
    Zelda Fitzgerald (1900–1948)

As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: you liberate a city by destroying it. Words are to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests.
    Gore Vidal (b. 1925)
