Noise Barrage

On April 6, 1978, supporters of the party came out in protest by asking bystanders and cars to make noise in support the opposition. However on April 7, 1978, the first national election under martial law held for the 165- members to the Interim Batasang Pambansa resulted in the massive victory of the administration coalition party, the “Kilusang Bagong Lipunan ng Nagkakaisang Nacionalista, Liberal, at iba pa” or KBL. Only 15 opposition candidates in other parts of the country won. None of the members of LABAN were elected. The opposition denounced the massive vote buying and cheating in that elections. On June 12, 1978, the Interim Batasang Pambansa was convened with Marcos as President-Prime Minister and Querube Makalintal as Speaker.

Some of the Opposition members ended up in exile or were driven underground fighting against the Marcos dictatorship. Alex Boncayao became a member of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People's Army, whose after his death a group carrying his name (the Alex Boncayao Brigade) became one of the groups trying to destabilize using urban guerrilla warfare against the Marcos and the Aquino regimes.

Famous quotes containing the words noise and/or barrage:

The square dance fiddler’s first concern is to carry a tune, but he must carry it loud enough to be heard over the noise of stamping feet, the cries of the “caller,” and the shouts of the dancers. When he fiddles, he “fiddles all over”; feet, hands, knees, head, and eyes are all busy.
State of Oklahoma, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

The rising power of the United States in world affairs ... requires, not a more compliant press, but a relentless barrage of facts and criticism.... Our job in this age, as I see it, is not to serve as cheerleaders for our side in the present world struggle but to help the largest possible number of people to see the realities of the changing and convulsive world in which American policy must operate.
    James Reston (b. 1909)
