Lactated Ringer's Solution - Development of Ringer's Solution

Development of Ringer's Solution

Ringer's saline solution was invented in the early 1880s by Sydney Ringer, a British physician and physiologist. Ringer was studying the beating of an isolated frog heart outside of the body. He hoped to identify the substances in blood that would allow the isolated heart to beat normally for a time. The original solution of inorganic salts was further modified by Alexis Hartmann for the purpose of treating acidosis in children. Hartmann added lactate, which mitigates changes in pH by acting as a buffer for acid. Thus the solution became known as "lactated Ringer's solution" or "Hartmann's solution".

Famous quotes containing the words development of, development and/or solution:

I can see ... only one safe rule for the historian: that he should recognize in the development of human destinies the play of the contingent and the unforeseen.
    —H.A.L. (Herbert Albert Laurens)

... work is only part of a man’s life; play, family, church, individual and group contacts, educational opportunities, the intelligent exercise of citizenship, all play a part in a well-rounded life. Workers are men and women with potentialities for mental and spiritual development as well as for physical health. We are paying the price today of having too long sidestepped all that this means to the mental, moral, and spiritual health of our nation.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

There’s one solution that ends all life’s problems.
    Chinese proverb.
