Famous quotes containing the words german, war and/or cemetery:

    The German mind, may it live! Almost invisible as a mind, it finally manifests itself assertively as a conviction.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

    Not marble nor the gilded monuments
    Of princes shall outlive this powerful rime;
    But you shall shine more bright in these contents
    Than unswept stone, besmeared with sluttish time.
    When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
    And broils root out the work of masonry,
    Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
    The living record of your memory.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    The cemetery isn’t really a place to make a statement.
    Mary Elizabeth Baker, U.S. cemetery committee head. As quoted in Newsweek magazine, p. 15 (June 13, 1988)
