Smith graduated from East Longmeadow (Massachusetts) High School in 1984,and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University. Smith served in the U.S. Army during the Persian Gulf War, rising to the level of lieutenant. From 1996 to 2005 he worked at People magazine as editor of book and music reviews.
