He then attended Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was a student and a letterman in football (3 years), baseball (3 years), and ice hockey (1 year). In football, he was a two-time first team All-Area and All-League selection and as a senior, while captaining his team, also garnered first team All-City honors and All-Area as a middle linebacker. Eckel amassed nearly 3,000 rushing yards in his high school career and 40 touchdowns. While playing baseball for the Churchmen of Episcopal Academy, Eckel recorded a .460 batting average during his junior season earning all city honors as well as All League/Area selections. He helped the Churchmen win their first league title in 50 years. As a senior Eckel earned similar accolades, helped the Churchmen win another league title, and was selected to the All-League and All-Area teams.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:
“If you are willing to inconvenience yourself in the name of discipline, the battle is half over. Leave Grandmas early if the children are acting impossible. Depart the ballpark in the sixth inning if youve warned the kids and their behavior is still poor. If we do something like this once, our kids will remember it for a long time.”
—Fred G. Gosman (20th century)
“Flood-tide below me! I see you face to face!
Clouds of the westsun there half an hour
highI see you also face to face.
Crowds of men and women attired in the usual costumes, how curious you are to me!
On the ferry-boats the hundreds and hundreds that cross, returning
home, are more curious to me than you suppose,
And you that shall cross from shore to shore years hence are more to me, and more in my meditations, than you might suppose.”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
